Thailand Expected to Delay Commercialization of 3G Services until Late 2010
July 03, 2009
Thailand's NTC (National Telecommunications Commission) revealed that Thailand is expected to delay the commercialization of 3G services until late 2010 instead of early 2010, the Bangkok Post reported on June 29. The NTC is set to submit a revised plan to its board for approval. The 3G license auction, which was scheduled to begin by year-end 2009, is expected to take place in January 2010. Should the auction begin as planned, the issuing of 3G mobile licenses using 2.1GHz spectrum will begin in the first quarter of 2010.

Thailand's leading telecom operators - including AIS (Advanced Info Service) and DTAC (Total Access Communication), and True, which planned to commercialize 3G services in the first half of 2010 - are expected to delay the launch date until late 2010, according to the same source. Even though further details regarding the base price, terms and conditions of the auction were not yet disclosed, the Office stated that more detailed information will be released around mid-September 2009.
